Chemistry Department is the single largest department of the college offering both 3 units chemistry and 6 units chemistry along with applied component that is Dyes and Drug. In addition students can opt for MSc by papers in the organic/inorganic and Physical chemistry.

The Department of Physics of Bhavan’s Somani College offers both

a) Six units of physics, &

b) Three units of physics along with three units of mathematics at the TYBSc level. The department conducts Computer Programming and System Analysis as an applied component at the final year of the degree course. This provides the students with much needed competency in the field of Computer Science. Thus it provides the edge to the main subject and helps the student in the future.

Besides Physics is one of the main subjects in the science stream of our junior college. In addition the junior college has a Vocational Course in Electronics. The department has two Physics laboratories, one electronics laboratory and a dark room for the conduct of light experiments.

A Physics exhibition called ‘Quantaziks’ is regularly held by the department. Large numbers of school children from nearby schools visit the exhibition. The department also organizes lectures and visits to Nehru Science centre, Worli, Mumbai.





The Departments of Botany and Zoology have spacious, articulately illuminated and designed laboratories and are amongst the best in the university. The laboratories are well organized having a variety of glassware, waterbath, oven spectrophotometers, digital balance, colorimeters, refrigerators, pH meters, electrophoresis equipments and other scientific instruments. There is a separate culture chamber with sterilization unit chamber, laminar flow, autoclave, light microscopes, homogenizer, shakers and stirrers, computer, slide photography unit, etc.

The museum of the Biology Department is one of the best maintained and aesthetically organized in the University. There are several rare, endangered and threatened species, comprising almost 600 animals collected, preserved and maintained by student and staff. Certain rare animal like lung fishes, corals, snakes, alizarin specimens, fossils, sea-fans, sea lotus, etc. are an integral part of museum. A variety of charts, skeletal parts and remains, models provide a substantial glamour to the museum.

In addition there are varied plant collection, herbarium, plant fossils and an aggregation of animal and plant slides.

The Botanical Garden, on the fourth floor annexe of the college new building is a collection of exotic, hybrid and wild plants along with certain variety of medicinal herbs like Ashwagandha, Brahmi, Adulsa, Aloevera etc.
